Family Systems Therapy

I really enjoy this method of working with clients. The beauty of family therapy is that it is effective throughout the entire human life span for all sorts of relationship dilemnas.  In fact, even "individual" problems, like depression or hyperactivity, have often been resolved through family therapy. As a family therapist, I can meet with combinations of family members as well as the entirety of your family at different times for maximum flexibility and treatment efficacy.  Family therapy often produces results more quickly than other methods, which only focus on "the problem child or the problem parent", ignoring the impact on the household and the reactions of everyone else in that person's environment. I'll work with parents to restablish their appropriate place in the household as well as realigning their relationships with each other and their children.  Children will learn better ways of interacting with each other and "black sheep", "the slacker" and "the tattleteller" will be stale roles that no one is interesting in playing anymore.

When a family is repeating a tired and dysfunctional drama, complete with intergenerational plot and special cultural effects, then the show can only be changed when the individual actors decide to take responsibility for their own script, acting out something new and choosing to interact with each other differently.  The show must go on; the question is, who's telling your story?

Common reasons to bring your family to therapy:
Disruptive behavior at school or at home
Coping with mental illness in the family
Relationship Issues
Divorced co-parents
Blended families
Marital problems
Substance abuse

"We were a strange little band of characters, trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together"--Erma Bombeck
